Why choose plastics? – key features
Excellent light transmission
PMMA is a material made from polymethyl methacrylate. It is a great alternative to glass, because it provides very high light transmission – up to 92% in the transparent version. Unlike glass, it does not have a tint (e.g. green), so it does not distort the colour of light.
Reliable durability
The main advantage of the PMMA glazing is being 10 times greater impact resistance than glass. It is therefore suitable for places where durability and strength are of particular importance – for example, in frequently used sectional industrial doors. It is flexible and easy to process – it can be cut, milled, mechanically and thermoplastic formed. It is also resistant to chemicals.
Optimal weight
Another important advantage of PMMA is its weight. It is half the weight of glass (the specific gravity of PMMA is 1.2 g/cm3, and for comparison, the weight of tempered glass is 2.5 g/cm3). This is important when designing, for example, sectional garage doors. The low weight, durability and high light transmission make acrylic often used as a substitute for glass.
Weatherproof resistance
Glazed units made of PMMA are resistant to moisture and temperature changes. The acrylic sheets do not discolour, even after prolonged exposure to the sun (high UV resistance), making it an ideal choice for any outdoor applications.
Thermal insulation and noise protection
PMMA has better thermal insulation properties than traditional glass, and is also known by a very good level of acoustic insulation.
Eco-friendly material
PMMA is an environmentally friendly material. It is non-toxic to the environment, also in terms of fire safety (no toxic or corrosive gases are released during a fire and very little smoke is produced). It is very durable and resistant to damage, which is why plexiglass waste is generated much slower than in the case of other types of plastic. It is 100% recyclable and energy-efficient in production – it requires less energy than glass production, and its low weight reduces transport and assembly costs.
PMMA SCRATCH FREE – scratch resistant
This type of PMMA SCRATCH FREE has a special surface that is covered with a hard coating (HC). It will make it high resistance to scratches and chemicals. It is therefore suitable for sectional industrial doors installed in challenging environments.
